With digital cameras and mobile phones, we can take hundreds of pictures or record countless videos without any effort. When the memory is full, we can just dump the files on our computers and start over. If you wish to keep track of your imported pictures and videos, then you should try PlayMemories. It can import images and video files directly from connected mobile phones, cameras or other devices and it sorts them automatically, based on their dates, geotags or other characteristics. The application also places a good selection of tools at your disposal, for editing and printing your pictures, sharing them and more.

The application's setup file is only 2.63 MB and the setup wizard will guide you through a few basic settings, but you have to wait several minutes until it downloads and extracts the software's core components. PlayMemories works on Windows XP, Vista, Win 7 and Win 8 and it is available for Mac OS X platforms as well. It doesn't ask for powerful hardware and you don't have to install any prerequisite tools.

PlayMemories provides a modern and sleek user interface, with neatly organized options. If you connect a digital camera, mobile phone or another external memory device to your computer, the software will detect it automatically and it will ask you if you wish to import its contained pictures or videos. If you decide to import media files from an external device, the software will take you to a clean and simple import screen, where you can select a source and a destination and choose which files to import.

Images and videos are displayed as thumbnails, on the main interface and you can select their creation dates, on the left side of the window, to filter the files. You can also access your collections, favorite items and other sections, in the same area of the interface. Additionally, you can display your files in a calendar view, which makes it easier to figure out when a picture was taken.

A selected picture's properties can be found on a panel, on the right side of the interface. The properties can be replaced with a series of useful tools, for editing or printing images, sharing them, opening them with a different program and more. The available tools are very easy to use. Most of them work in a similar manner. Once you select one or more tools, you must click and drag one or more files to a box, on the same interface and click a button to proceed with the operation. For example, if you wish to create a postcard, you can drag and drop the images you wish to include, click a Next button and the application will display a series of templates and other output options.

It is also possible to upload files to the Internet. Clicking the Share tool will display a series of online services, like YouTube, Facebook, Flickr, Picasa and others. Uploading files to these services can be done just like any other operation, by clicking and dragging them to a box and clicking a Next button. Alternatively, you can upload the files to a PlayMemories cloud folder, if you wish to view your pictures and videos on other computers.

Pros

The software provides a comfortable and elegant user interface. All operations, from importing images to uploading them to the Internet can be done with only a few clicks.

Cons

Installing the application may take some time. With the straightforward and efficient tools that PlayMemories places at your disposal, importing images and videos from external devices and managing them can be as easy as possible.
